Important Note: Put the Windows folder in the root of your card, NOT in /data/dsx86/. Otherwise, the programs will not show up on the screen.

Also, changing the screen size requires disks...

That's probably because you tried to change the screen size using Windows Setup. You should change it with the Display options of the Control Panel.
