Game Compatibility

(for application compatibility see below)

To avoid cluttering this list, games which return a "386 opcodes not supported" when trying to run should be listed on their own page.

Games which refuse to start because of not detecting a 286/386/486 CPU using their own internal housing detection methods should be listed on their own page as well.

Windows Game and Application Compatibility should be listed on it's own page.

Remember that you can try to bypass the various DSx86 error messages by pressing the B button after they occur!

Tips for editing

To add another row to the list, right-click in the row above where you want the new one and select add row.
Try and keep the list in alphabetical order, and put a leading "The" at the end.  (ie; Immortal, The)
Compatibility status should be kept simple. Playable, Not Working and Partially Working should be fine.

Shall we make a rule that 386 opcode errors shouldn't even be mentioned unless we know for certain they are being falsely reported? I see a few games on this list (like Command and Conquer) that simply require a 386 to play, and Patrick's said that 386 support is almost certainly never going to happen. Perhaps a new status type such as "Requires 386" would be appropriate, so people don't keep trying to test games that will never work.

Also, we should probably standardize whether a leading "The" should be preserved or moved to the end. I prefer the latter myself, but we should stick with one or the other.

Jason I 100% agree. I was noticing people trying games that have no change of working.

I have a suggestion. Another compatibility status should be added, that's something among the lines of "Perfect".

After testing Ken's Labyrinth on 0.14, the verdict is "Playable" but even so, not to a great degree. "Partially Working" could not be said about it either, because it is working indeed, but just not great. "Perfect" or a status among those lines could be used to more easily determine whether or not a game is worth the time with the current version.

A good example would be calling Zeliard "Perfect" - All aspects of the game work; the 64 color graphics, the Music, the sound effects, etc. Then take a look at Secret Agent. Its definitely playable, but not perfect - Sounds loop and hang, the scrolling is jittery.

While is is true one could determine any problems by reading the description provided with a game, adding another status would no doubt be of benefit.

OK, well, I moved "The Incredible Machine" to "Incredible Machine, The" since I can't imagine my proposal to standardize the "The" is terribly controversial.

As far as statuses go, here's my suggestion. We create two new statuses. The first is "Requires 386" which should be BOLD BLACK. That should be about as unmistakable as possible. Then I'd propose, like Namo said, we do go ahead an add a "Perfect" category, which is gold-colored. This would conflict with the orange of "Partially Working," which I'd suggest we just move to some other color. Perhaps blue, but it doesn't matter too much. That way, it can be assumed that anything Green or Gold is most likely playable.

Finally, I was thinking, maybe we should add a column for whether the game can be beaten in its current state. A lot of us (myself included) are going out and playing games for a few minutes, maybe an hour, and then declaring it to work perfectly, even though we don't actually know this to be sure. There should be a way for people to indicate if\when they've actually managed to beat the game within DSx86.

Perhaps that should be a requirement to give out a gold Perfect rating?

Anyway, thoughts?

General question -- any tips on which games look best in scaled mode? I like the idea of seeing everything on one screen. For example, Ultima V does a pretty good job...

Namo said

at 6:22 pm on Jun 8, 2010

I'm not really sure about the 386 bit. I can't remember which, but I know some games give a "386 opcode" error which you can dismiss with the B button which later works perfectly or fine. Perhaps some 386 opcodes are error on the error recognizing part of the code - either way, there's no way to be certain of this as of yet. We should perhaps wait until there's a new version available.

As for the "Perfect" category, I think it would be a good idea to do it and change the color to gold. Jason's right, it would make sense to have gold and green represent working games. I can confirm that Secret Agent 1 is completable; I finished it about a half hour before this post. Since part 2 and 3, Plus Crystal Caverns run on the same engine, its safe to assume they're all perfect. I can also confirm that Bio Menace and Jill of the Jungle 1 are completable. It could be safe to assume that Zeliard too is perfect, the game is legendary for its ability to run on virtually any hardware, but we definitely need someone to confirm whether or not it's finishable.

Also, yeah, the whole "The at the end of a game name" should be fine.

Hiho DSx86-fans,

386 opcodes - well, looking at games like command & conquer, its never likely going to work on DSx86. So I think it could be removed without a problem. I think Pinball Dreams also needs a 386 processor. On the other hand: Not every 386-op-code neccessarily has to be created by a 386-game. Like already stated. (Burntime for example gave an 386-op-code, but with 0.14 it´s running nearly perfect. Maybe we could create a little sub-page here for "rejected" games.

also, how do we proceed with the DSx86 version history in the games...
I thought a bit about it, but I don´t see a good solution.
I think it looks tidier with only the last version number the game was tested with...
But then you don´t see the "testing-history" of the game anymore. (or should the improvements from version to version be explained in the text body?

Maybe someone should upload the older versions of DSx86 somewhere (maybe at least 0.12 and 0.13), to make comparable testing of games easier, because I have erased all my old versions... (rapidshare-link or sth. like that should be ok)

Tips:

How to avoid skippable SB command opcodes:
"Unsupported SB DSP command 48"
"Unsupported SB DSP command 1C"
If you are getting SB command errors in a game, try reconfiguring the audio-setup of the game (mostly by using the setup.exe or install.exe of the game).
The Music- and the Audio/Speech-Devices must not both be handled by SB (Soundblaster).
As for as I know, DSx86 supports Soundblaster, Roland, Thunderboard and PC Speakers.
-> Just make sure, that the SB-device is only used for the Music OR the Audio/Speech part of a game, and not for both.

saving/loading issues:
if you have problems regarding saving or loading, try these measures:
check if the game comes with a .CFG or .IN file in it. Open the file with a text reader and check it for possible problems.
Eventually you just have to edit a savefile path.
when you do not find a .CFG or .INI: Try to install the game that has problems to the root of your card.
Try using folder- and file-names, that are not longer than eight letters

suggested Testing conditions:

Make sure that you are testing your programm with the latest DSx86 version
(->eventually the actual version number should also be shown on top of the compatibility page in a short sentence, as well as a short text: "Latest version is 0.14. Make sure to send your debug.log to Patrick Aalto" or sth. like that)

Games should be playable on a 286 processor.
This can sometimes be hard to find out. (the old gaming-manuals do not show the system requirements very often). But you get many high-resolution boxshots of game packagings on abandonia.com for example. On them, you can often find a sticker with the minimum requirements of a game.

All games should be tested with a freshly started DSx86.

All errors should be tried to be recreated a second time, so that you can determine if this was just a random error or a recreatable error.

If you have problems starting a game, try out all the other .EXE or .COM files of the game.

If you think that a game is just not running as it should, please check it on your PC first using DOSBox and look how it behaves there. (if you are not used to DOSBox, use a shell-extension for it (like f.e. DOSShell, a graphical program that helps you in starting your games))
When you get the same problem in DOSBox, the issue is not likely to be solved, or is eventually even user-generated :-)

debug.log
Try to clear up your debug.log before sending it to the Programmer for bugfixing.
meaning: deleting all non-relevant "user requested breakpoints".
It is also useful to explain to what game an error-message belongs to, and how it happened.
Also give informations about where to find the game.

sePL80 said

suggested conditions for the compatibility-criteria:

Perfect (green) [gold]
We cannot test every game until the finishing-credits. But trying to save and load a game as well as checking out all relevant options in-game as well as testing all the display modes the game supports (CGE, EGA, MCGA, VGA) and just playing it for some minutes, or finishing at least one level of the game should be the minimum at least.

Playable (blue) [green]
playing and finishing the "game" is possible, meaning: you can do more more than just see the intro screen or the start-menu. It should also somehow possible to finish the game.
But the game can have one of the following problems: -minor slowdowns, minor graphical errors, minor sound problems, sound volume problems, intro has to be skipped, random skippable or unskippable "opcodes", not all display-modes that are supported by the game are working (not including Hercules and Tandy graphics)
Slowdowns or speedups of games can naturally be so extreme, that they are not playable at all. They should then be registered as partially working.

Partially Working (yellow/orange) [blue]:
getting "ingame" is possible, but you get
recreatable/unskippable opcodes within the game or the menus that don´t allow the game to be finished,
major graphical errors or glitches
saving or loading not working

Not working (red)
unskippable opcodes and errors, that prevent the game from being tested any further.
This can also mean, that the intro and menu are working all right, but getting "ingame" is impossible or leads to instant opcodes or errors.

386 or Higher (black) also seems interesting...

everyting in all, this is all very blurry. Everyone has his own definition of Perfect, playable, Partially working and Not working. And I wouldn´t say that my definition is the right one (Ißm not sure about that myself)

Hm, now reconsidering the statuses, I don't think it would make sense to have a perfect game signified by gold - its too close to orange, which is also a warning color. We should go with the color codes that sePL80 pointed out (In the parentheses).

Any objections here, fellas? Its 1:38 in the afternoon and I have nothing better to do than start changing all those statuses.

As for making the statuses further explainable, perhaps each game title could be a link that leads to another page, and then make each status a link that leads to sePL80's explanations of each.

sePL80 said

at 7:00 pm on Jun 8, 2010

Linking the game titles to a page here that is dedicated to this particular game would be very interesting (if possible).
There, the comments would concentrate on the specific game, one could see who has been testing it, and when, and with which version, and what the changes between versions are). also there could be general tips on starting up or handling the game. what .exe to use etc. And if/when the game has been completely been played through and with what version...
That would really be the cherry on the cake.
Linking each status of the games listed here to an explanation maybe is too much work?. Linking the example statuses to some kind of explanation would be interesting though.

Regarding the status color changes... maybe we should wait a bit on some other reactions and/or suggestions:-)

I would split the rating of the games in 3 factor:
Audio (perfect, good, sufficient, low)
Video (perfect, good, sufficient, low)
Game playability (perfect, good, sufficient, low, null)
In fact I would prefer in the appropriate cell of the table a drop-down menu with the various choices and spaces for notes (like Game playability:none Note:386 needed).
Also I approve the link to game resources on the web, like www.abandonia.com, mobygames, ecc

I started to work on a template sheet for a Games-specific page. When finished, you will find it in the Games folder.

It will be possible to copy the content of the page into a new page, and then you will just have to fill out the needed fields for the needed. well, it is not really necessary for all games, but for some it might be useful.
I hope I will have it ready until tomorrow, so that you see what I´m talking about.

Namo said

I'll be glad to help with those pages. Maybe a description of each one, screenshots...

Oh, and Miles, I agree. We can that on each individual page, and then use Perfect, Playable, etc. for the main page to keep it uncluttered.

Ok, the new page is up, right now there is Xenon 2 as an example. please edit or comment the page. But I think it is pretty usable. @Namo: feel free to edit and/or comment.
@master_thief: uh oh, are you able to create folders and to rename pages...cause it seems like I can´t.
I would have put the "game template" into a games folder and renamed it into _Game template_ or sth like that ,so that it is always on top of the alphabetical order.
Now I´m trying to copy the content into a new page -> Xenon 2
after all the comments and changes on the game template have been made, I would clear it up to make it non Xenon 2-ish and put some comments on how to use into it.

@Robot2037: Yeah, I´m also a little confused sometimes about these numbers and letters instead of the actual button-names :-) But the .ini-configuration programs listed on the DSx96 download-page are really ok.

Master_Thief said

Yeah, I'm able to create folders and rename pages.
I'll sort that out tomorrow (it's currently 1 in the morning here in the UK), along with updating all the games I've tested (all 254 of them....yikes).

Nice work with the template btw (I'd maybe try and have all the tables the same width though)

@sePL80: do you have list for key codes? i need key code for SHIFT key and other ones should be useful sometime. I would be fine to have a complete key list here on wiki.

what about non-english games for example? should them be on compatibility list too? For example Im from Czech Republic and there was released few commercial point and click adventures that should be working in DSx86 too. I tried 7 dni a 7 noci, but i cant go beyond first screen, because mouse is not reacting. But these games are available in czech language only and nobody else will understand.

7 dni a 7 noci (7 days and 7 nights): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFI3F3uBeLY

Just another question - I tried Alone in the Dark and I cant even run game. However wiki says it is partially works, with bad palette. Is this game supposed to be working or not? Are there several versions for example?

re: Alone in the Dark - There's 2 versions as far as I know, the floppy version (which is the version I've tested) and the CD version. According to mobygames, the floppy version runs on a 286 and the CD version needs a minimum of a 386, so that could be your problem.

Wow, I go away for a day and everyone suddenly gets busy. That's great! And otherwise, I'm good with the statuses sePL80 said. I agree that the ratings system should be kept as simple as possible: this is a compatibility list, not a detailed review guide. Better to keep it so that people can determine, with a glance, whether a game should work.

Comments more specific than "massive slowdown" or "bad audio" should probably be saved for some other venue. Perhaps a bug tracker sometime in the future? But either way, I definitely think we should keep this page as simple as possible.

Hi. I have Pharaohs Tomb (a freeware version of it from the Author) and the fonts are all garbled and the game screens get garbage appearing on them which then interferes with the game. Up in the list, it says that the game is playable. Any ideas what version that is? In DosBox on a PC this game works perfectly.

sePL80 said

@all:
About the status criteria: it is really too precise(in my opinion). I wouldn´t give any of the games that I have tested a "perfect" status. Just because I haven´t played through them. and the "386 or up"-status should now also be obsolete, as we have the moby-games lists. It was a really good idea at first, and I think "perfect" should be used, but only for played-through games.
So YES, add a "Perfect" when you know that it is :-). I will do so when I find one.
In the meantime you maybe want to create some "software-specific sub-pages"? They are fresh and tasty and ready to be fertilized with great content. YUMMY!

@Robot2037: It´s ready. please check it out and give feedback if you have any suggestions.
And use it! :-) hehe.
I´m creating pages for my tested softwares now, and maybe I´ll help out with Master_Thiefs mega list, so that he just has to fill in the changes between versions (I got dibs on Master_Thiefs list from A to B, (I decided now).
I would say that the most important ones are the ones not really working as of now... at least they are for me :-)

Did I mention that I didn´t have internet for nearly a whole day, because my neighbour switched off his router??? That didn´t ever happen one time in the last 1 1/2 years. (god bless open WEP connections, they are still out there, somewhere)
Happy Painting, and god bless

I'm trying to get two games to work: Dark Forces & King's Quest VI. I'm guessing Dark Forces might be a bit too much considering that it requires 8 mb of RAM & a 386. I'm getting a "DOS/16M error: [15] protected mode available only with 386 or 486". I don't have high hopes, but figured it was worth mentioning.

King's Quest VI, I've gotten it to run, but unfortunately, the version I downloaded didn't have the speech pack functional (it doesn't play in DOS Box). I also have the Roberta William's Anthology, which is great, but again, I can't install the DOS version so that it's an all-in-one package. To me, since I grew up playing the voice version, it's speech or don't bother, so I'm dying to get this to work. Anyone have any luck getting speech to work?

Ignoring the speech problems the only issue I'm having is the frequent debugger that pops up when doing something like opening a door. Once I skip it, it doesn't seem to affect gameplay, so it's easy to put up with.

Master_Thief said

at 10:44 pm on Jun 10, 2010

I've just tested the CD version of Kings Quest 6 and the speech does work in DSx86. You have to set the sound option to Thunderboard (using install.exe) for it to work though, setting it to soundblaster gives an "unsupported SB opcode" error everytime it plays speech but the speech isn't played.
You may also have to alter the resource.cfg file, to make it point to the right directory.

Dark forces is a complete no-go though.

Guys, who added Blake Stone to the compatibility list? I tried this game few days ago and got "386 opcodes not supported". Menu was working fine, but game crashed after selecting new game. How is this game supposed to be on compatibility list marked as "working perfectly"? Are there several different versions? Thx.

Master_Thief said

at 2:06 pm on Jun 11, 2010

I was the one who tested Blake Stone.

The version I've got works perfectly (apart from 6 "unsupported opcode" errors on startup, but those can be skipped). There were a couple of patches released for the game(v2.0 and v3.0), which could be the problem with your game (mine is the original 1.00 version).

Namo said

at 6:23 pm on Jun 12, 2010

Jason, you gotta remember; this is still a work in progress app. Some 386 errors are random and some games still work after you dismiss one. People are gonna ask whether or not its one of those false errors; that's just the whole of it.

In my opinion, its best to just get Lemmings DS (also homebrew). It has all the levels from Lemmings, Oh No More Lemmings, and all the X-Mas Lemmings. It also has Zoom in and 5 or so control schemes.

Also, there's a DS Homebrew port of the first 3 Commander Keen games (before the engine switched).

Robot2037 said

at 9:28 pm on Jun 14, 2010

Hmm I still need DOS key codes to create ini for some games. For example there is written for Golden Axe that user didnt know how to select character. This game is controlled by arrows for momevent, 5 on numeric keyboyard for attack, 0 on numeric for jump and right shift for special attack. He couldnt select character because he had to press 5 and there is no numeric keyboard in DSx86. So there is need to remap keys for this game.

LHX Attack Chopper works fine for me (v0.14) - Possibly game version issue.

UltimaI entry - Works fine for me (v01.14) and this entry talks about going into space? Wrong entry maybe

Also just a comment - rather than having comments here at the bottom of the list how about setting up a new page to have commnets? Just reckon having all this discussion at the bottom of the actual wiki list is a bit untidy.

Hey Master Thief, busy testing? ;-)

someone always adds c&c to the list, I added the system requirements of the official readme now to...

Blake Stone: I tested v.2. -> So it seems v2 and v3 are not working.
I have not yet sent a debug-log though, partly because they are 386 opcodes and I´m not sure about v2 and v3 being playable on 286.

WOW DSx86 v0.15 is another big improvement. Even games that don´t have been worked on (like f.e. Adventures of Captain Comic) are working now.

I have played Xenon 2 Megablast in VGA for plenty of hours since sunday. (ahh so addicted, memories of days past...)
Battle Isle´s also working :-), History Line also reported to work...
Call of Cthulhu -Shadow of the Comet works fine now with full Soundblaster support..

Looking forward to the wizardry test results and the other Master Thief games.
This compatibility list is just getting bigger and bigger. :-)

bruce965 said

at 8:23 am on Jun 23, 2010

I added Command&Conquer to the list (Just one time), I didn't imagine it to have a so "high" requirement... DS Has 8 RAM Mb it's own, I don't know the CPU, but I don't think it to be higher than 486 66-MHz, so, do I must remove it?

Master_Thief said

Shame the Castle Master games no longer seem to be working.

For some reason, even after DLDI patching, DSx86 does not work on my m3 perfect lite (slot 2 device). I suspect it is the case for all M3 Perfect lite owners, but I can only speak from my experience :) I have tried different patches and have gotten the same result. Is there a possibility that there is a conflict with old slot 2 cards and certain versions of libfat?

But it worked in my g6 real (slot 1 device), and I am trying out as many old classic dos games as I can and will hopefully have some new games to add to the compatibility list if it helps. Thanks for all your hard work to Patrick and all those responsible for helping him. DSx86 is an awesomely impressive feat of programming. I never thought I would ever see Wing Commander chug away on my DS (yes, it is kinda chuggy and sluggish, but still amazing).

Also, I was wondering if setting different configs in the ini actually does anything? I cant seem to get them to work for different controls in different games. I used the config app and I am always stuck on default.

Namo said

at 6:58 am on Jun 24, 2010

@Sold: When you make a new configuration, the name of the configuration has to be the exact same name as the application. If you are trying to run a game called WING.EXE, for example, make sure the configuration is called WING.

By the way, incredible work on all that testing, Master Thief!

Namo said

I think each game page should have a section for a user review. Anyone opposed?

sold said

at 2:57 am on Jun 26, 2010

@Namo: Thanks for the help. I thought I might mention that having your games or apps in a directory with more than 8 characters in the directory name seems to mess with the configuration switching. Renaming the directories to 8 characters or less fixed the problem. I was wondering why the configs wouldn't change because I figured I was doing the right thing naming them after the executable for each game :)

Also, I tried D/Generation and it works sweet and doesn't look bad at all with the screen mode set to jitter. The only problem I can see is the controls are messed up because it uses the numpad or a joystick to control the game, so hitting diagonals is impossible using the dpad unless there is a way to map joystick controls. Is there any plan for joystick support in DSx86?

sold said

at 4:14 am on Jun 26, 2010

Monster Bash works, but you have to turn soundblaster off and use pc speaker if you want sound. Soundblaster error says something about DSP missing.

Mystic Towers also has problems with soundblaster so pc speaker again

Namo said

at 9:43 am on Jun 26, 2010

@Sold: Would you mind putting your D/Generation Configuration on the Custom Control Configs page? I've been trying to play that one for awhile but I could never figure out what the controls were. :)

Maybe I could figure something out with the controls too. Maybe set it up like Snake Rattle and Roll for the NES if you've ever played that.

sold said

at 10:44 am on Jun 26, 2010

@Namo: I cant get the controls working properly because they game forces you to use the number pad, so diagonals have their own buttons. To play properly, you need to be able to map 8 keys to movement. I tried mapping the diagonalsto the d pad so I could move the character around easier, but it isn't much fun without the full range of movement. I hope joystick support is implemented at some stage. It would be cool to have the option for some games. Anyway, I'll check my config and post here soon :) Still sussing it out myself.

Oh, and it only seems to work for me if I run the dgenvga.exe file. For some reason the dgen.exe file dont work. Is it the same for you?

I'm gonna have to check out snake rattle and roll. Never played that one before.

wow, the new blog is out and it´s GREAT.
Pate posted the keycodes for the right control and other keys. They will be supported in the next version. (you just have to edit the config manually) I´m looking forward to see further testing of Golden Axe, Ugh! and other games with the new version.
Also DSx86 0.16 wil run faster.
And again, several game improvements.

@Namo: I would like to see a test-section below the config setting.
It woukd be interesting to read a specific test for playing a game on the DS.

By the way, I have encountered an unsupported opcode in Warlords. It happens when you press F1 in a mission. (v0.14 and v0.15), but I have not yet reported it.

But the best tests in my opinion, are the ones that don´t give any kind of point or star rating.
They just describe the different aspects of a game and whether they work well or not. So the reader can pick out the aspects most important for him, and decide wheter this game may be interesting, or not. (Just my opinion)
Best regards.

(Although Disney Sound Device doesn´t seem to be detected by sierra games, but they are running fine with full soundblaster setup now, so it´s no problem.)

cool reviews, namo. (although you should eventually check the picture link in super solvers. And eventually post a link of the shareware release of secret agent instead of the full version).

I´ve gotten quite interested into these games, gonna check them out.
Super Solvers looks really interesting. (since I´m waiting for the 3rd Professor Layton release)

World of Xeen has a problem where the mouse cursor's horizontal position doesn't match the stylus (when in mouse mode, obviously).

Also, it's impossible to move sideways, because the original game uses ctrl+left and ctrl+right for this, which can't be mapped AFAIK (not in dsx86cfg anyway, and I wouldn't know the keycode otherwise).

mtsr said

I've got Windows 3.0a up and running on DSx86 with no problems. There were two dismissable INT Errors during installation, but they don't seem to have any effect on the installed program.

I've tested four different programs that run on Windows 3.x OS'es: Watch Out, Willi!; Chip's Challenge, the windows version; Medieval War v1.5; and Castle of the Winds. None of them worked; they all return a dialog box saying "This program requires Standard or Enhanced Mode Windows." This is quite the odd error. Is Windows 3.0a not a standard mode of Windows? Anyway, I'm certain these errors have nothing to do with DSx86 itself, I just thought I'd share.

Master_Thief said

at 7:57 pm on Jul 19, 2010

I think it's because Windows 3.0 has 3 different modes it can run in Real, Standard and Enhanced. Standard and Enhanced I think both need protected mode so it's a 386 or higher for that and Real mode is the non-protected mode it runs in i.e.286 version.

Not sure what the difference is between the modes apart from the CPU requirements though.

Its a iso image, you should unrar it with WinRar and copy all the contents to SD:\data\dsx86\win\ now go to this folder an run setup, follow all the instructions and you will have installed correctly...
It gives some unsuported INT calls, buts no seems to make windows run incorrectly(sorry for my bad english...xD)

Namo said

Your best bet is to download an Iso of Windows 3.0a. All the files are in one spot as opposed to being split into several disks.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=YDHFIYFD

That's where I got mine. Use CD-Drive emulation software like MagicDisc or burn the iso to a CD with a burning program like IMG burn. Then open up the CD, copy all the files to a folder, and put that folder on your DS-Card. Run setup and you're good to go in about 5 or so minutes.

You need to have the windows directory on your flashcard the same as you would on a PC. i.e. if you installed it in C:\windows during install, you need it as c:\windows on your flashcard.

Or, if you look in your windows directory there should be a PROGMAN.INI file. In that there should be 3 paths for the 3 .grp files. Change these to where the files are situated on your flashcard and windows should find them.

Hi, sorry if I disturb you, but I can't make Hocus Pocus run, in the program it says "Running: Hocus" but the game doesn't start, do you know why?

Namo said

See if running setup first does anything. If not, try downloading your game from a different location.

i guess i'll try, because i used setup, like, 50 times now lol well, thank you for your suggestion then!

I have a suggestion:

A new page for programs that work on Windows 3.00a, and hopefully someday, 3.1.

Vitor said

at 7:59 am on Aug 4, 2010

Great.

We could have a list of programs for "require Standar or enhaced mode", and "Require a newer version of windows" (aka win 3.1) errors too. That would be usefull to avoid testing games that don't run under win 3.00a.

Namo said

at 2:01 pm on Aug 4, 2010

Ok, I'll get right on that.

Namo said

I've made the Windows Compat. page. All we gotta do now is get the main list cleaned up of any Windows apps.

Almamu said

Changes: Added Windows 3.00a Wiki page and linked it to the main wiki.
Added a link on Windows 3.00a Wiki page to Windows 3.X Compatibility List
Cleaned up some Applications that runs under Windows 3.00a from the main list and added to Windows 3.X Compatibility List.

In case anyone has been looking for a simple text-based menu system to launch games/apps under the emulator, I added "Moo" to the list above. It works fine, can autoscan your card for possible DOS apps, and you can edit/add/remove entries. I now have my autoexec.bat set to run it when I startup. :-)

Also, D/Generation works great although it has some control issues (see the entry above).

Vitor said

I'm using Windows to launch the games, it does the job very well.

Namo said

at 7:43 am on Aug 7, 2010

Ah, thanks for that.

Also, if you wouldn't mind, could you post your D/Generation control scheme?

MichaelA said

at 9:21 pm on Aug 7, 2010

I put it on the details page for the game: http://dsx86compatibility.pbworks.com/D-Generation
Note that I didn't map save/load and a few of the other ctrl/alt combos. Check this page for those: http://www.cheatbook.de/wfiles/dgeneration.htm
It's tricky to play without diagonal movement though. Good luck! ;-)

The Fifth Horseman said

I've added mappings that allow you to use D-Pad for diagonal movement. Enjoy. :)

I'm noticing a lot of people putting button combinations in the game description on the compatibility list.

We have a separate page for button mappings. Please put them there, or on the game's individual page.

For those who complain about issues with keyboard scancodes: The scan codes can be edited into the config file manually, regardless if the key is present on DSX86's touchscreen keyboard or not. It just takes a little research (and, if neccessary, some trial and error) to find the correct code to use in the config.
Scancode for keypad 5 is 4C , for right shift key it's 36 - I've tested them in Golden Axe, and both work just fine.

The Fifth Horseman said

Just FYI, I'm working on a new configuration manager for DSx86. The ability to map the numpad codes will be included.

how do you run a game and look at its manual in txt format at the same time?
i tried buck rogers matrix cubed in windows 3.00 but it crashes 'unsupported INT'
buck rogers works in dos but needs copy protection from the manual

The Fifth Horseman said

at 5:14 pm on Feb 15, 2011

Simply put, you can't. You'll need a printed copy of the copy protection answers or a cracked executable.

Krondor works almost perfectly on a DSTWO. The 3D scenes are fairly navigable as long as the detail level is set to low.

is possible a copy of windows 95 on dsx86?

Buleste said

No you cannot run Windows 95 on DSx86. The DS is just not powerful enough.

Petros said

at 1:05 pm on Jul 27, 2011

And Win 3.1? I don't run it?

Buleste said

at 2:27 pm on Jul 27, 2011

If you read the compatability list then you will see that Windows 3.1 is not working at the moment. You can however run Windows 3.0

Petros said

at 3:42 pm on Jul 29, 2011

Sad because we can not run windows 95 :-( My hope is that the emulator has to update Windows 95 later this year.

No point in "hoping".
I'd give you a long-winded response as to the exact what's and why's, but it all sums up to two words: It's impossible.

Have Any chance to run Ds2x86, On R4?

Buleste said

at 9:26 am on Jul 30, 2011

No. But you can run DSx86 on a R4. The reason the SCDS2 has a separate version is because it has an extra CPU and memory something which most other cards do not have. And no there is no hope of Windows 95 running on DSx86 either.

Petros said

at 9:39 pm on Aug 4, 2011

Hello, I wonder if it's possible to run Windows 3.1 in DS2x86? I recently bought a DStwo DS2x86 to run. grateful

Buleste said

at 9:06 am on Aug 5, 2011

Have you tried reading the compatibility list?

Windows 3.0 is working but not 3.1 at the moment. Also Windows 3.0 has some issues so it is not working fully yet.

What you should also remember is that because of the differences in screen resolutions (DS is 256*192 and lowest Windows resolution is 320*200 (higher for later versions)) windows will never be able to be displayed without some loss in quality.

analog999 said

at 9:54 pm on Aug 23, 2011

FYI - Don't confuse this list with the other DS2x86 list... I did, and I'm trying to go back and fix my mistake. Perhaps they should both be in the same place, and have another column listing which version of dsx86 is being used.

Jumpman Lives seems to have major sound issues on Version 0.36 Beta of DS2x86 on a DSi XL. Also, running the game the first time works fine, But trying to run it since it worked last night, It crashes after the introduction/loading sequence to 4dos.

Other than that, Most of my fave old titles work flawlessly (Or better than expected on such limited hardware!) Keep up the ossim work, This i quickly becoming my new fave plugin for my DSTwo :D
